Games will not run

Postby What's_my_name? on Wed Aug 10, 2011 1:48 pm

Hello,

I have installed multiple games from the software manager, and although they install fine, they refuse to run when they are clicked on in the applications menu.
For example, Alien Arena refuses to run at all. While I have previously been able to work SuperTuxKart and Assault Cube, they both refuse to open now.

I've tried re-installing them, uninstalling a new proprietary driver (that I put in AFTER STK and AC were working), and looking for the tools in the package manager.

I'm using Mint 11, through mint4win, on an HP Pavillion g7 laptop. The driver was for AMD video cards.

If someone knows a solution, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Whats my Name,

This worked for me. I hope it works for you.

Open terminal and type:

sudo apt-get upgrade

It will ask for your password. Key it in and hit enter.

When it is complete, reboot mint. That's what I did with success. 8)

I'm resurrecting this old thread to bring up that Alien Arena will not run on Linux Mint 12. Runs fine with all the other incarnations of Linux Mint, just not 12.

This is what I get when entering "alien-arena" in Terminal.

Code: Select all
ln: creating symbolic link `/home/k****/.config/alien-arena/data1': Permission denied
using /home/k****/.config/alien-arena/arena for writing
Could not exec default.cfg
Could not exec config.cfg

I ran into the same thing so I went to the home folder and opened .config as administrator, then changed permissions on the alien arena folder.

Then I typed sudo alien-arena into the terminal and it started. Seems to work now...

Now it also works by clicking the link in the Mint Menu

I have followed the above instructions, yet I still get nothing but errors.
I am just going to try the Package Manager install again.

ALSO:
I am curious as to how this game would run at all since none of the dependancies are met.
I checked the alien-arena website, downloaded their package, and looked in Package Manager to verify that none of them are installed by using the Package Manager install or alien-arena's own package.
So how could this run?
CPU - AMD Phenom 9850 Quad 2.5 GHz
MB - ASUS M3N HT Deluxe
RAM - 8 GB DDR2 800MHz
GPU - Nvidia 9800 GT
OS - LMDE 64 bit

meh, haven't played in a week, and something broke it, will update if i can get it to run again

--ok got it to run, but i have to run in terminal as root (kind of scary right?) ha ha

so:

su
enter password

alien-arena

and it works

#update: I can only get it to run in Gnome Classic, not Cinnamon, when I run it in cinnamon I can see it freeze and in terminal it says something about permissions denied for pulse (also having terrible issues in Cinnamon with sound or something causing the bottom panel not to load).

#It will load up and show the first screen but mouse and keyboard don't work and I have to ctrl alt backspace to log out....
#
#but seems to work in Gnome Classic ok

works in cinnamon now too, for some reason it just needs to run as root at least once or twice in order to get going. I can select it from the menu too. only trick i have to do in cinnamon is make sure i'm waving the mouse around wildly right when i click on it otherwise there's no mouse and i have to ctrl alt backspace
