Does anybody have experience of running Nokia_PC_suite in wine or Oracle VM VirtualBox?
My old XP laptop, which I keep for programs that did not work on Linux, is starting to show its six years of age. It is slow, and if I switch on the wifi it will crash hard. But I prefer Nokia slide phones, and I need to keep backups of my address book.
Alternatively, do any of the Linux options for managing an Nokia E66 work well? Last time I tried (a year or two ago) I had only AT command working, which was not enough for my needs.

Re: NokiaPC suite
From the WineHQ AppDB listing I'd assume Nokia PC Suite will install out of the box on Wine, but I'm not sure it will fully function (outdated ratings on compatibility rate it "Garbage", meaning completely unusable). Have a look: http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.p ... n&iId=1026
I'd say, just try to install it

Re: NokiaPC suite
Thanks for the link, but the comments do not look encouraging. It tells me that the program runs in wine, but there is no phone connection. So it is useless. I know that wine does not support USB device drivers, but can use some USB devices with a generic serial port driver. If necessary I will give it a try.
After reading your links, I am more hopeful that VirtualBOX with WInXP might provide a solution. I just have not had success using USB devices with it before. I will hold out for some advice on using VirtualBOX a few more days. I am sure others must have tried it with NokiaPCSuite
Thanks,
Garvan
PS. VirtualBox is working! I don't know why I hesitated so long before just trying it. Garvan

Re: [solved] NokiaPC suite
If you do try VirtualBox, be sure to install the "guest additions" on WinXP (inside VirtualBox). The "guest additions" provide further integration for WinXP (as WinXP will then know it is running on VirtualBox) with the host hardware, allowing it to access USB. (There are lots of guides on how to do this, sorry I don't have a link immediately available...)
