According to your screen shots the problem is with the file /etc/apt/sources.list

So, post a copy of this.

To get access to the contents of the file:

Open terminal.

Type:

Code: Select all

gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
Then copy and paste this, either to the forum (if its short) or to pastebin.com, and then post your pastebin url here.

Oh yeah, btw, what version of mint is this? i.e. mint 11 main etc...

You can try, and if you're lucky you might get a new config file created. If not, here's a copy of mine, that you could try copying and pasting into yours, and seeing if it works.

Edit: Corrected the file to use

http://pastebin.com/bMMDMALe

Also, you'll need to use:

Code: Select all

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
to edit the file

hehehe Ok

Thanx a lot, now i understand little bit more about linux... I'm in adjusting period from decade of using windows... I'm still in the search for distribution that is best for me :)

so far I've tried Debian 6, Ubuntu 11.04, Feora 14, Dream Studio(this one is I believe Ubuntu, just modified for music editing) and now I'm in LMint... next in line is Mandriva and later I'm gonna try OpenSUSE

...but so far Mint is my choice, I think i'll be back later on this distro :D

deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ natty-security main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/ natty partner
deb http://extras.ubuntu.com/ubuntu natty main

Did that copy work for you? If it didn't i managed to get mine working.

Stupid mint decided that it was an ubuntu distribution...

Anyway, to correct it you can use:

I duno...

It work ok, now the icon on UM is green checked, i've got some new updates

didn't ask u... what do u think about Mandriva and OpenSUSE, should i try them or not?
istrandi

Re: Update manager-refresh problem

Post by istrandi »

Try them if you can spare the bandwidth. You'll find that you may like them etc. Ubunutu or Mint are probably the most noob friendly distro's (in my opinion). So give them a try, see if you like them. If not, you can always switch back. Also, if you are considering trying a lot of different distro's i suggest you buy a memory stick, then use unetbootin (http://sourceforge.net/projects/unetbootin/) or pen drive linux (http://www.pendrivelinux.com/) to stick them on a memory stick to test them.

Re: Update manager-refresh problem

Post by Drkman030 »

I use unetbootin, so far I've try a couple distros... and so far Mint is my choice, Ubuntu is flashy :) i didnt like Unity menu :S Today i was tried Mandriva live from flashdrive, looks nice, but it was too slow :S I couldnt boot OpenSUSE from USB :|

 i duno what hapend  but i lost border on windows

do u know what happen?
istrandi

Re: Update manager-refresh problem

Post by istrandi »

have you tried rebooting the computer? Seems like something might have crashed, whatever actually renders the borders, that is.

If that doesn't work, then you've probably managed to delete something

Re: Update manager-refresh problem

It's a different error.

Type into terminal:

Code: Select all

gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list.d/local-respository.list
This file should read:

deb file:///usr/share/local-repository binary/

Change it to this, save the file and it should work.

Edit: Corrected the code from sudo to gksudo. Thanks for pointing that out

Did that work?

BTW, you should start a new topic for a different problem.

Also, can the original poster stick a [solved] tag in the post name please.

Re: Update manager-refresh problem

I did that saved it then i got this error pop up in terminal. Im sorry for the inconvience with this issue but i am stumped on this one I cant even use apt anymore

Re: Update manager-refresh problem

Post by istrandi »

sorry, wasn't thinking when i posted. correct code is:

Code: Select all

gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list.d/local-respository.list

and you can ignore the error message - it should just open in a gedit window.
everything else as before

Also, this seems to be a problem with mint itself... I got the same problem as you after a fresh install of mint

If you just can't get it to work with gedit then:

Code: Select all

sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list.d/local-respository.list
will bring up a command line editor.

Also, if your install is like mine, then you will have to apply the original fix I posted as well...
