Hi,
I am using Linux Mint 11.
during installation I specified a US-International keyboard layout. However in practice the deadkeys cause far more problem than they solve.
Now I cannot get rid of it. Whatever I do it always returns as default. I made the "USA" default. I even removed "USA International" from the keyboard preferences. However after a while "USA International" is back and set as default.
This is driving me bonkers...
Doe anybody know how I can permanently make the normal "USA" layout the default?
Thanks

Re: How to disable US International Keyboard
I used the tips in the reply to open the Keybaord preferences.
I selected the USA keybaord.
Removed for good measure the "USA International" from the selected options.
Applied it "Sstem Wide" so the dialog looked exactly as shown.
I noticed the keyboard applet icon dissappears from the toolbar (at the bottom right). I guess this is logic, as since there is only one option available.
I closed and reopened the keyboard preferences to be sure. Still ok : Only "USA" present.
I restart my system. Log In. And the keyboard Icon is back in the toolbar with "USA International" as default.
Any tips how to make the choice persistent so it survives reboots?

Re: How to disable US International Keyboard
I believe because of the install language selected that later version of Ubuntu/Mint require a default keyboard selection, and they have chosen to use USA international (to get multiple language characters )

I had a similar problem and ended up hacking the .dmrc file in my home directory.snamellit wrote:Any tips how to make the choice persistent so it survives reboots?
Try chopping off the 'intl' bit from the line starting with Layout.

You can also select USA International (no dead keys).

The point is that selection doesn't stick unless you modify the .dmrc file. At least that was my experience.
Re: How to disable US International Keyboard
I had to edit /etc/default/keyboard (Linux Mint 11 LXDE):
Code: Select all
# The following variables describe your keyboard and can have the same
# values as the XkbModel, XkbLayout, XkbVariant and XkbOptions options
# in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
XKBMODEL="pc105"
XKBLAYOUT="de"
XKBVARIANT="nodeadkeys"
XKBOPTIONS=""
