Unfortunately, slow resume of VMware virtual machines is a fact of life on Ubuntu based Linux distributions since Feisty. I find that if I use the guest operating systems hibernation feature, rather than VMware's pause feature, resume is much faster. In your case, set XP guest to hibernate, then power off the virtual machine instead of pausing it.

As for your other issue, the problem has to do with the fact that both the host OS (Mint) and guest OS (XP) are both vying for control of the USB device. VMware player only reads from certain USB ports at a time, while failing to recognize others. To compound the problem, the USB port VMware checks could change each time. I'm not sure if this is a bug with VMware or a "feature". In any case, you can workaround the issue by trying your various usb ports until you find one that recognizes the device, at which point you should click on the icon in the VMware toolbar that enables the device. Your XP virtual machine should then immediately "auto-detect" the device. Good luck!
