Cairo-Dock black box issue

Postby z06gal on Fri Dec 23, 2011 12:39 pm

I use the CD and if I log into Mate, Gnome Classic, CD with or without effects, I have the black box around the dock. If I click on any application, I have no borders and no max/min/close buttons. I have to log out and log back in to fix it. I have run compiz --replace, compiz-decorator --replace all to no avail. If I bring up CCSM and check the boxes for the settings, they go away as soon as I close CCSM. It is as though compiz is not running at all. I have removed everything rebooted and re-installed and get the same thing. I logged into Cairo-Dock with effects session about 2 weeks ago and it worked perfectly so it looks like something was updated and messed it up. I have not installed anything so I know that isn't it. I have a Dell XPS with Intel Integrated and Nvidia Optimus graphics which turns on nicely with Ironhide so that isn't the problem. I love the dock and don't want to remove that. So, does anyone have any idea what the deal is here? I have been trying to figure it out for the past 3 days and just am not winning the battle. I did see a post on the Ubuntu forums of someone with the same issue who said the upgraded Metacity was the issue so he downgraded and I tried that but when I clicked on the "install package" after I downloaded the older Metacity, nothing happens. It will not install so I reinstalled Metacity in synaptic and am back where I started. Thanks so anyone who can help

Have you tried, In you Cairo dock settings; Behavior/System/Composition/Emulate compostion with fake transparency? and/or Make the config panel transparent?

EDIT: try using: gtk-window-decorator --replace as the command in your window decoration command in your ccsm.

The fake transparency gets rid of the black box but compiz doesn't work which is why I log into CD session. I'll try the other command now and see what happens.

Nothing happens. I hit enter and the cursor just sits there blinking. When I go "compiz --replace" everything blinks like it is trying but nothing changes. The same happens if I use the fusion icon and click on compiz as window decorator - blinks but doesn't change.

Open you CompizConfig Settings Manager goto Effects/Windows Decoration/in you General tab at the Command entry put gtk-window-decorator --replace
back out of your CompizConfig Settings Manager now and try compiz --replace in your terminal or Alt+2.
See if your compiz starts now.

EDIT Sorry Alt+F2

alt-f2 didn't work so I went compiz --replace in terminal and this is the output:

Checking if settings need to be migrated ...no
Checking if internal files need to be migrated ...no
Backend : gconf
Integration : true
Profile : unity
Adding plugins
Skipping upgrade com.canonical.unity.unity.01.upgrade
Skipping upgrade com.canonical.unity.unity.02.upgrade
Initializing core options...done
compiz (core) - Warn: failed to receive ConfigureNotify event on 0x1e0002c

This is the output I have continued to get after removing/reinstalling, etc. Maybe it will help you with my problem. Thanks so much for helping me with this :D

Looks to be a bug so I guess I'll just have to wait it out. I can run gnome shell just fine as I have no dock issues there.

in linux mint 13 i tried all the above with no good results, dunno why , but after some research

i installed xcompmgr then launched this xcompmgr -n& -> this enabled just transparency
install like this:

sudo apt-get install xcompmgr and added to startup applications, before cairo dock is loaded and buala!

Find this on another forum!! Works for cairo dock black box issue.

------------------------------

You should have a Desktop Settings app in Preferences or the Control Panel. Open it up and there's a checkbox to turn on Marco's native compositing. Works great.

EDIT: I think it still says "Use GNOME compositing" or something like that. That's just a leftover from the port over to MATE. It still works as it should.

----------

In linux mint 13 just type desktop settings .> windows -> Check use gnome compositing! then buala!!

This is what I do, too. I don't know about other releases, but it works perfectly in Xfce and LXDE.

The compositing selection fixed my issue. Thanks
