delete recent items

Postby skaterx on Tue Dec 27, 2011 4:00 am

I am a newbee so I am using a friend to help me but he's nosy and I don't want to give him access to my personal files. The search option is the worst invasion of privacy I have ever seen. In other versions of linux there is a Gui option in the menu Places/Recent Documents/Delete recent Documents. This does not exist in linux mint 12. (It took me 8 hours to get that far) Are you going to put it in or do I have to learn some kind of command in the terminal? This is a real deal breaker for me.

If your friend that is helping you is being given access to your login account, then what difference will it make if you delete the recent documents list when all he has to do is open your Documents folder and look in there anyway?

The normal way to handle this is to set up a different user account if you have more than one user on the machine, then the problem never arises in the first place. Then change your password to one that your friend doesn't know.

Adding another account is easily done in System Settings/User Accounts.

So you can't delete this buffer?

I made a new administrator and transfered everything over. Now I can start from scratch. I then made a second administrator which only I can access. Kind of a radical way to solve the problem but the Recent files buffer is clear. I also think I saw a way to kill it from the terminal. I'll have to look into that.

Thanx

Y'all are kinda mean, you would think this were an ubuntu forum!
After all, except for noobs, linux mint has no reason to exist.
Fortunately Mr. Google is not so ornery.

Rather permanent, but works code:
"" > ~/.local/share/recently-used.xbel
sudo chattr +i ~/.local/share/recently-used.xbel

In the version I use of Linux Mint (10 or Julia) the file .recently-used.xbel (hidden) is not inside ~/.local/share . It's inside ~ (/home/username). If you delete this file all the recent documents or items or files of gedit, eog (Eye of GNOME), evince (Document Viewer) and Totem will disappear or go (and probably the ones of more programs or applications). If you open a new document or file with these programs the file .recently-used.xbel will be created again.

But erasing .recently-used.xbel doesn't affect to the recent history of OpenOffice.org. But there is an easy solution also for this: just delete the file /home/username/.openoffice.org/3/user/registry/data/org/openoffice/Office/Histories.xcu . This file will also be created again if you open a new office document.

If you want a permanent solution for LibreOffice, open LibreOffice, under "Tools" go to "Customise", open the "Menu" tab, click on "Recent Documents" to highlight the entry, select "Delete" from the drop down menu provided via the "Modify" button.
You will have to do the same for Calc and the others if you use them.
That removes the "Recent Documents" entry from your menu.
