Mastercook

Post by brian666 »

My wife is missing her Mastercook program from her Windows days. Does anyone have any recommendations for a Linux equivalent, or know whether Mastercook (V6, AfAIR, so rather old) will behave itself if I set it up via WINE?

Thanks.

Gourmet Recipe Manager!
http://grecipe-manager.sourceforge.net/

It imports Mealmaster, MasterCook and KRecipe files...

I have no first hand experience with it though. It's in the repos so you can install it with:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install gourmet

Perhaps someone with experience can answer why Gourmet won't open in Mint 11?
Mint-21.0 Mate 64 bit / LMDE-5 64 bit

Thanks for the hint, dagon.

Chief Jim - I've installed the program from the repos without problem, and it opens just fine for me, but I'm using Mint 9 not Mint 11.

My wife will have a play with the program when she gets chance - I wouldn't know the first thing about Mastercook - and I'll report back when she's done so. I don't expect it to be too soon, though, she doesn't have a PC at the moment due to a head crash a couple of days ago.

Edit: This post was accidentally edited by an inexperienced moderator. The missing rows of text was, from memory, a comparison of UTF-8 and ISO-8859, and what characters in UTF-8 that prevented conversion between format. Sorry, dagon!

Can anybody recommend an editor that will TELL me which characters are preventing it?

This I don't know but you can try and convert the files from the command line:

All those new buttons can be scary for a new mod! ROFL.

I started out by saying that Gourmet Recipe Manager was running just fine on Mint 12 Lisa. Good to know if 11 was having issues. Then I discussed how I have been unable to import my old recipes as exported by MacGourmet. I exported in Mastercook and Mealmaster formats, and they would not import. I exported in plain text format and got the encoding error. It looks like Macs default to UTF-8, and Gourmet Recipe Manager can't handle that as a Mastercook or Mealmaster file.

Gourmet Recipe Manager suddenly gave me a UTF-8 option, only for plain text imports. I used that, and the app wants to import recipes. However, the importing seems to be very broken. It wants to put directions before ingredients. I need to use the import tool to go through the recipes and fix what is not assigned correctly, but the tool takes 5 minutes to even respond to a scroll command. I am unable to get what seems to be drop-down boxes for assigning titles, and directions, and ingredients to do anything whatsoever. Also, after waiting a very long time for the import window to open, the app proper stops responding/crashes when it finally opens.

I guess I need to report all this to the developer.
