G'day! I want to update my motherboard BIOS which I obtained from the manufacture but its for a WinFlash.exe install.
I don't have W on my PC, hence how do I install this BIOS update with Linux. I do have WINE installed but have not been successful in running any W programs with it. I have kept it updated.
I'm running Linux Mint 11 and Fedora 16 dual booted.
Any pointers to get me going in the right direction would be appreciated.
Cheers John

Re: How to install BIOS update?
If your motherboard don't have problem, i recommend do not upgrade your BIOS.
For non windows user you can try : http://www.linuxinsight.com/how-to-flas ... drive.html

Re: How to install BIOS update?
Mmm.... having read your suggested reference I can see why you suggest not doing a BIOS update.
Maybe easier to image the HDD, reinstall XP, do the BIOS change, if in fact a change is needed, and then reinstall the HDD image.
Can I determine what BIOS # is currently installed using Linux? I'm running both Linux Mint 11 and Fedora 16.

To install any BIOS updates, you usually only need a boot disk + the BIOS (manufacturers) update utility + the new BIOS file
--that utility will save your current BIOS, install the new one

Windows had an online (internet) based BIOS update, example was ASUS motherboards
--that is inherently a bad idea, as you have little manual control of the process, and if it mucks up, you had better have the alternate method of manual control to fix the mess caused by an internet or windows + manufactures application glitch
You update a BIOS when you check the manufacturer's site to see what the new BIOS fixes
--it may or may not be important to you, and sometimes the main change is a speedier BIOS load (it starts the computer faster)
