Adobe InDesign, Phtoshop++, Quark, Finale 2008, etc

I'm nwbee here; I feel I'm all the time, but..... ok.

To my quiestion:
How to run programs from Adobe CS3 in Mint (linux in general) and heavy programs like Finale 2008, or Sibelius, Quark, etc? I have to use this kind of a programs in my daily work, but how in Mint?

I really want take the step away from MS, for ever.....

Try Wine. Menu > Software Portal > Search 'wine' > Install; and then put the Adobe Suite DVD, or whatever, and double click on the setup icon as if Windows was. Before, Wine was an emulation program of the Windows API, but now, it run Windows applications natively, so you won't experience slowdown. But, have in mind that not all the application run on wine out of the box. You have (http://appdb.winehq.org/) database in which you can see which applications run, which version they use, and so on. I know there are specialized companies providing specific wine-based solutions to run Windows applications comfortable in GNU/Linux, such as Cedega (specialized in games) and CrossOver (MS Office, and a couple more). Also I recommend you to keep an eye con an application call 'Wine Doors'.

Thanks for the answer, that was interesting. Some things I miss from Linux is the possibility of runing MS heavy programs without the help of such "help programs" like Wine or any other of that kind.

I guess in the future Linux will be the OS wich most users we'll use. Let's hope so!

Well, you have to use them, because GNU/Linux it's a different OS with diferent... ALL xD. So you need something that tells the program, ok, i'm cheating you, this is a GNU/Linux but for you, it's a fancy Windows. And now there's less problem as I told you before Wine doesn't anymore emulates programs, but they now run natively. So the performance it's almost the same.

Write an e-mail to the manufactures and tell them that you really like their application, but now you are using Linux, if enough people do this, sooner or later, they WILL understand, and start making Linux versions of all the big comersial applications.

That's true indeed. Two years ago Adobe launch a public poll to the users asking them which one of their apps would like to be ported to GNU/Linux. And that gave the thought that Adobe would start thinking in GNU/Linux market. It's been two years since that, and no news at all, but as Leia with Obi-Wan, hope it's the last thing to lose. By the way, I thought it won Photoshop in the poll.

I don't know about the other programs you mentioned, but Crossover Office supports Photoshop on Linux.

I must say though, in the last couple of years a lot of Linux applications have matured to the point that they are more than satisfactory replacements for many if not most big name Windows applications. They just don't have the big names because of their almost zero advertising budgets.

Only really Inkscape gets positive reviews from professionals. GIMP, Scribus and the lothers are all usually marked down for their poor interfaces, which seems to be the main stumbling block for open source creative apps. I cant wait for GIMPs new GUI to come out cause the current one stinks.

I agree partially with belovedmonster. Though Scribus it's not perfect I don't think it's a bad GUI. I miss some important feature like sticky boxes, and more accurate layout. In the case of GIMP, you can always use GIMPshop (http://www.gimpshop.com) which is GIMP with a Photoshop-like interface.

But Finale and Sibelius are lightyears ahead of the linux programs for music notation. Plus they both now use Kontakt to play their sounds.
