any subtitle-workshop for linux?

hi all! im an old windowsuser but i cant look at bill and melinda without throwing up so i left it behind. but i miss one thing that i havent figured out YET. do linux have any subtitle workshop that i can edit srt's and sub's without wine? and what application do i need to playback avi's with srt's? (windows= vobsub & media player)

I recommend you Gnome Subtitles, yet it is not perfect it has the basics, video preview, re-timing, etc. Search at gnome-files.org for another one, but this one is good. Also there's another one for KDE, but I can't remember the name, probably KSubtitles or K<something>, hehe.
