Audacity + OSS on nforce2 crashes

Howdy, I am using Daryna on a Abit AN7 board with the nvidia drivers for the nforce2 chipset (ie. soundcard which is using OSS). I installed Audacity 1.3.3 from the repos but it crashes after prompting for first start language, failing on this assertion:

I installed the drivers from nVidia
http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_nforce_1.23.html

with lots of helpful hacking to get nvsound and SoundStorm working from here:

Any ideas or helpful troubleshooting tips? I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to linux sound things. Thanks!

I found this sentence somehwere
Also make sure JACK isn't running, because Audacity and JACK don't get along well in my experience.
hostChannelCount and PaOssStream_Configure gave one hit each in google
paInvalidSampleRate gave nine hits
so this is not a common problem ...
