Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you
installed software in a non-standard prefix.
Alternatively, you may set the environment variables OPENSSL_CFLAGS
and OPENSSL_LIBS to avoid the need to call pkg-config.

And, yes, OpenSSL is installed (even 0.9.8, above the recommended). Might check out the pkg-config manuals....
