Move to other workspace misbehavior (Compiz?)

Postby Tony G on Tue Feb 26, 2008 3:47 pm

I have both a top and a bottom panel (I added the top one). I also have added the workspace switcher to my bottom panel, and changed it so it's 2x2. When a program window is not maximized, if I move it to another workspace (right-click on top bar of window > move to [another] workspace), rather than respecting the top panel, the window in then located on the new workspace so that the top bar of the window (where minimize / maximize / close are) is hidden behind the top panel.

Running Darnya. And have the following packages installed (among others, but manually entering everything that a search for compiz in synaptic wore me out):

compiz 1:0.6.0+git20071008-0ubuntu1.1
compizconfig-settings-manager 0.5.2+git20070912-0ubuntu1
compiz-core 1:0.6.0+git20071008-0ubuntu-0ubuntu1.1
compiz-fusion-plugins-extra 0.52+git20070928-0ubuntu1
compiz-fusion-plugins-main 0.52+git20070928-0ubuntu2
compiz-gnome 1:0.6.0+git20071008-0ubuntu-0ubuntu1.1
compiz-plugins 1:0.6.0+git20071008-0ubuntu-0ubuntu1.1

Happy to provide more info; please just ask.

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Is your problem that the title bar becomes hidden behind the top panel?
I just answered another question about that and the only answer I found was that "wobbly windows" can do this, and as you have compiz....

Workspace misbehavior in Evolution & Pidgin (Compiz?)

Exactly.

On a related note (perhaps), if I have the 3-d cube effect for the workspaces enabled, Pidgin's buddy list (but no other application) creeps down each time I exit and restart it.

I take it this means that some interface issues are endemic to compiz-fusion? (Which is what I think I have--whatever comes as the default with Darnya). Is there an alternative you'd recommend? (Beryl? I have no idea what that means, but I've picked it up from the forums thru osmosis :) ).

The workaround I've found to both the Evo and the Pidgin misbehavior is making the workspaces linear (1x4 vs 2x2, and disabling the 3d cube). But I only do these grudgingly, as I'd prefer either a cube or a 2x2 setup.

Thanks again for your time and expertise, H.

Best,

T

Yeah Compiz is somewhat buggy - but I don't know for sure what's going on
compiz fusion which is what Daryna has is the merger of compiz and Beryl. Beryl is no more...
Could you go to "Apperances" and disable "Visual effects" and see if it's still the same

Appearance is one of the places (compiz-config being the other--it made no difference in outcome whichever I used) where I made the changes from 2-d linear effect to 3-d cube effects (switching from "normal" to "extra" visual effects and back). I experimented with the workspace switcher with "none" for visual effects selected, and it eliminated the windows shifting. What's this suggest?

Also, fwiw, I do not have "wobbly windows" selected in compiz-config.

Thanks again, H.
