I did some searching, but not finding anything on the following. I come to find that Linux Mint is rather aggressive on the network when it comes to shares. I have Samba running on another machine that is sharing my photos and videos as read-only. It easily finds these and then I find my other machine's harddrive going to town and a lot of network traffic. What is it doing? Is it making thumbnails of all my media? I never let it finish as I stopped samba. It ran for several minutes before I did finally kill samba.

Did you do anything on the Mint machine? Like enabling samba.....
If not it's fusesmb that's a bit on the rampage. You en/disable that in mintDesktop.
There is a network alternative, named differently depending on the version of mintDesktop
Don't fix it if it ain't broken, don't break it if you can't fix it
