Flash video with Opera browser

Postby willie the cat on Fri Nov 06, 2009 5:43 pm

I have Mint 7 installed on 2 machines.
I have a dual-boot with Vista on my laptop-Core2duo with 2Gb DDR2 Intel integrated video, and a WUBI install on my older, less powerful desktop. Celeron 3.2 and 1Gb DDR400 memory, AGP Radeon 9250.
Flash video such as Youtube works perfectly with the Opera browser on the the WUBI install, but only the sound plays on the notebook. I can't get any picture at all.
1/ Can anyone explain why this is so?
2/ Is there any way I can get Flash video on Opera on my notebook?

Flash video works perfectly with Firefox on both machines, so the codecs are there, somewhere.

In the Opera address bar type "about:plugins". You should see this:

    Shockwave Flashapplication/futuresplash spl
    application/x-shockwave-flash swf
    /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/flashplugin-alternative.so

What exactly does your wubi laptop show?

I have seen similar problems with FireFox and Opera on Mint and Ubuntu.
It results from the flashplayer package not being.. packaged.. properly.
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get remove flashplugin-nonfree && sudo apt-get install adobe-flashplugin

If the new plugin package doesn't seem to work at all the following might be needed to make the plugin 'visible'
to Opera and Firefox
Code: Select all
cd ~/.mozilla/plugins/
ln -s /usr/lib/adobe-flashplayer/libflashplayer.so .

Only two problems I know of can occur; the plugins directory doesn't exist (mkdir ~/.mozilla/plugins) or the adobe-flashplayer directory has a slightly different name. A quick look in /usr/lib will show you (ls /usr/lib/*adobe*)

Both machines show what you have above.

I cut and pasted these into terminal on my notepad, and now it tells me that I have the latest Flash version installed.
Flash video still isn't working in Opera, but working just fine in Firefox. I've tried Youtube and BBC Iplayer anong others.

Beginners question: How do I "cd" to a particular directory?

There you go, intel hd audio chipset, will need intel= for the sound
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=843012
    HDA sound chips
    snd-hda-intel
The Intel Hda sound chip is widely used and can be found on almost every desktop and laptop PC manufactured over the last few years. There are numerous versions of this chip and a zillion configurations that OEMs have made by programming them for their particular needs. This has created a nightmare for the driver writers since the OEMs are very lazy about publishing the details

Sound isn't the problem. Using Opera on my laptop, I get sound but no picture on Youtube, BBC Iplayer and other Flash streaming sites.
Strangely, Opera worked "out of the box" on my desktop machine
Everything works fine with Firefox on both machines.

I still can't get Flash video or games to work in opera.
Is this normal?
The sound works just fine. although a lot of users have posted about sound issues.
