SOLVED:DVD/CD-RW , DVD playback issues - Thinkpad R52 Mint12

Postby skymeadow on Fri May 18, 2012 7:40 pm

SOLVED by uninstalling and reinstalling mplayer. Also uninstalled Totem as it did not seem to be working right, and also installed the mplayer frontend smplayer. Video playback with audio seems to be working. Having a bit of trouble navigating among multiple tracks on the DVD because I can't find the DVD's menu, but there are ways to select "chapters" and "sections" so the one I need must be in there somewhere.

I installed Mint 12 on a Lenovo Thinkpad model R52. (Note that prior to installing Linux, movie playback on the DVD drive had been working fine in Windows, so there is no inherent hardware or BIOS setting issue.)

Most functions are working quite well (this is our 3rd Linux Mint in the house now), but we have some very strange symptoms when attempting movie playback!

After the install and adding all the codecs, the drive would not play back a video DVD. While debugging per the advice at http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=29740 and http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=97976 I wasn't able to discover anything specifically wrong, but a part of the DVD (the menu perhaps?) started playing when I issued the command
Code: Select all
mplayer dvd://
in the terminal while inserting the disc! And without this command, just inserting the disc and waiting for automount to detect a video DVD and invoke mplayer, mplayer starts then immediately terminates without playing the movie, every time, testing with two different commercially made movie titles. And when it plays via terminal command, the mplayer window isn't right: it shows just the video stream, but there are no controls accessible by mouse. You can pause with the spacebar but the regular pause, run, fast forward buttons are not present.

So we have a perplexing little problem here!

Obviously we'd like to just pop in a DVD and have mplayer (or any appropriate app) play the movie.

Hardware specs:

This drive is made for the laptop's ultrabay and can be removed or hot-plugged.

Written on the DVD drive is:
DVD Multirecorder/CD-RW with P/N: 39T2671 and serial number 11S39T2670Z1ZAUZ164311, June 2006.

Linux identifies the drive as MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-830Sx and I got that info by right clicking on the drive icon when a disc is inserted and the drive has mounted it.

Symptoms & related info.

A blank CD-R disc is recognized by the Brasero burner as being present with 737.0 MB freespace (correct) and a blank CD-R disc icon appears on the desktop. I was unable to eject the blank CD-R disc: /dev/sr0 is mounted. By starting Brasero again, the CD ejected on command.

Next, I inserted a blank Memorex DVD-R recordable DVD. Popup: "just inserted a blank DVD - select what application to launch)." I selected "Always ask me". Brasero recognizes a blank DVD-ROM here with 4.7 GB free space. I ejected the disk OK.

Next, inserted a CD with mp3 recordings. Nautilus opens with the MP3 files shown. I clicked on and Banshee Media Player started and played the mp3 audio OK.

Next I inserted a non-commercial video DVD. It worked. I was able to access the on-DVD menu, select a track, and play a few minutes of video + audio. Then notification: "An error occurred. Could not read DVD. This may be because the DVD is encrypted and a DVD decryption library is not installed." Note: This DVD is not encrypted, it was made by a church for wide distribution. I was able to close the player and my Gnome desktop is still there.

I checked the BIOS settings. Before the Linux Mint 12 install I had set everything to maximum performance, high power, regular CD-ROM speed, etc. So to try something different I changed some of the power settings back to Intel Speed-Step enabled, adaptive power, adaptive thermal settings to balanced. I left CPU and PCI bus power management unchanged on automatic.

A commercial movie DVD does not play. Upon insertion it spins up, mplayer starts and its window is briefly displayed, then terminates. DVD rotation has stopped and no error messages are seen.

Code: Select all
apt search libdvdcss
returns the expected:
Code: Select all
v libdvdcss
p libdvdcss-dev
i A libdvdcss2

(what does the A mean?)

Code: Select all
locate libdvdcss
returns the expected:

/usr/lib/libdvdcss.so.2.1.0
/usr/share/doc/libdvdcss2

/usr/share/doc/libdvdcss2/README

plus several files related to the installation process -- changelog, copyright, .deb package, md5sums, .postinst etc.

I tried to get some debug information as instructed in another thread:

and then the prerecorded commercial movie "Alexander Nevsky" played in mplayer. Yep.

Then I tried HBO's series Rome. The DVD does not play upon insertion, but if I issue

Code: Select all
mplayer dvd://
in the terminal while inserting the DVD, the following output is captured and the DVD plays:

-----------------------------------------

I just do not understand why DVDs will play when the command
Code: Select all
mplayer dvd://
is issued in a terminal, but not autoplay upon disc insertion.

Maybe the terminal command with its output changes the timing or causes a slight delay that causes hardware/software interactions to work better....... ?

Any insight into how we could fix this problem would be most welcome!

Thank you very much.
Sky Meadow

** Edited hours after first posting to add the symptom of mplayer controls missing when the DVD plays via terminal command "mplayer dvd://".
