I am using Mint 11 on an Asus Eee.
The sound volume is "o.k." for ear buds but totally inadequate without.
I cannot find how to up the volume.
Can anyone tell me how?

Have you tried to use the "alsamixer"? Open the terminal and run:

alsamixer
-
