Newby question - cannot play avi files with Mint 13 Cinnamon

Hello,

I am completely new to Linux Mint. Maybe this has been asked here a thousand times before; I have searched through many postings, but I cannot find any solution.

I have made a completely clean, fresh and new install of Linux Mint 13 Maya Cinnamon 64 Bit with codecs.

Every time I try to play an .avi file I get from Movie Player the error message "Required plugin could not be found - Python requires to install plugins to play media files of the following type: text/html decoder"

What am I doing wrong?

That sounds like an internet radio error. (?)

But, try installing these:
- gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad
- gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg

They are already installed! In the meanwhile I founbdout, that I can in fact play some avi files whereas I cannot play some others (but which are played by VLC under Windows!)

Did You Try VLC With Mint

Yes, what's so special about that combination?

VLC is a native Linux software. If it reads whatever you want with the Windows version, it should work either under Linux.
