rhythmbox can't add songs to ipod

i am using lm13 mate,
new install I added rhythmbox 2.96
I copied over my music from a back up
Now I can not add music to my ipod.
I was able to add some songs m4a's and some mp3's but then later I could not.
now nothing will transfer when I drag it over.
I have the same problem with banshee.
Am I missing a plug in or something on the ipod itself?
