Sound won't work after running updates

I just had to reinstall Mate 13 and it works great before I do ANY updates. Afterwards, I notice that my microphone doesn't work and when you go into CONTROL CENTER and SOUND ... When you try to test the speakers it is silent. Some programs, like VLC have sound... other things, like Firefox do not. and it won't play any themed sounds when you engage them either. They were working JUST FINE before the updates.
