dvd playback problems

I installed linux mint 13 and did all the software updates but still cannot get dvds to play. I have tried with vlc and movie player with no luck. I have also followed the dvd section http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=766683

I get this error in vlc messages when i try to play the dvd.
main error: ES_OUT_RESET_PCR called
main error: ES_OUT_RESET_PCR called

Does anyone have any ideas i can try? I know the drive works i installed the OS with a dvd iso.

installed gnome mplayer and it works correctly so it must be a problem with vlc and movie player
