the external mic doesn't work

Hi , I have linux mint 13 ( Mate ) on my laptop , the sound works perfectly when I plug in a head phone the output sound become from the head phone as expected
but the input sound still from the internal mic not the head phone mic .
So how can I get my external mic works ?

well I solve it by running

alsamixer

in the terminal then press F4 and choose mic instead of internal mic
