Media server, HTPC & LTSP on Mint?

I am thinking of building a HTPC and using it as our home media server. I also want to run two thin clients (maybe with LTSP) for my kids from this system.

Is there any reason why this wont work, or is a bad idea?

I am especially concerned that things will run slowly, I am not looking for high end performance, but I would like things to work smoothly without annoying hangs/buffering.
