mp3gain "no changes to track.mp3 are necessary"

I would like to use mp3gain to normalize my music without writing tags so I use this command: mp3gain -k -r -s s * However, every time it gives me the message "no changes to track.mp3 are necessary" for all my mp3's. Any idea what could be going on? I would just use the option to write id3 tags but it writes to id3v2.4 which my mp3 player doesn't support.
