skype sound quality is awful

Is there any way of improving it? Its very crackly. I tried adding the following to etc/pulse/daemon.conf but it makes no apparent difference

Using an external microphone is slightly better.

tell us more about your system:
- type/model soundcard/controller
- version of Mint
- version of Skype

Sorry mint 13, latest version of skype (I checked) Relatek ALC268 sound card.

Add to this on my daughter's laptop Skype quality is non existent. The test sound works but not the test call - cannot hear anything mint 13 intel cantiga. On my laptop I tried a Skype call I could hear the other end clearly, but she could not hear me at all with either external or internal mike just got static. Any clues anyone - this is very frustrating.

Does anyone have good skype sound? I use radeon 5870 and mobo onbd on both are echoy and mushy.

Its more bizarre I can hear the person but they cannot hear more than crackling yet the test call is OK with external mike.

Is this still a problem on Linux Mint 13? I have this problem on 15. Skype is basically unusable unless you only want to listen.

I guess it's a Pulse problem. I'd greatly appreciate if Linux settled with an audio subsystem finally, and made that work. OSS, ALSA, Pulse, are they going to "invent" another one with newer issues instead of fixing the old one again?
