I have installed the XFCE version of Mint 14, and would like to be able to play video & audio files from a Windows7 media server.

I have installed VLC, as this apparently supports uPnP. But the uPnP option is missing. I also think Totem will act as a client, but I have failed to make anything work.

So, is it possible to do what I want with Mint? Any recommendations on clients, or configuration would be really welcome, as I am rapidly running out of ideas. Thanks.

I've been using minidlna recently, having been a ushare aficionado before installing Mint. Seems ok - easy to configure and works well enough with a PS3 and a Humax PVR. It does hog CPU when it's rescanning content libraries but they all do that to some extent and it doesn't last long.

Thanks for the recommendation, but that looks like a server. It's a client I was looking for.

Having said that, I'm looking at servers now, as I suspect that the W7 server isn't to good, so I will certainly check this out.

VLC is good!

If you click Ctrl+L or navigatie to <View> then <Playlist> you can select <Local Network> and there you have the uPnP option. Select your "Media Server" and off you go.

VLC doesn't work for me, I'm starting to suspect that I may have a dog slow network, and that's part of the problem.

We have a Gigabit switch on order, and hope to have most of the clients, and the server working over the new network. At the moment, it's just 100M Ethernet & 802.11n WiFi.
