Missing automute in Linux mint

I installed linux nadia today to find that I have no sound, absolutely none. However, there is sound when I use a headphone. So I have been advised to disable automute in alsamixer but the problem is no automute option in alsamixer, although I used the F5 option to display all options under alsamixer, this automute doesn't show. I have installed the updates and restarted my computer stil no solution.
