Live CD has sound, install does not!

Post by toddgrim »

After "playing" with the live CD of Mint Mate 14 64bit where everything, sound-wise, worked fine I installed the OS and now there is no sound whatsoever, with exactly the same settings as the 'live'. BTW-Mint is replacing another distro install of Linux (Zorin) which had no such problem. I'm stumped. Am I missing something?

Post the output of this:

Code: Select all

inxi -A
And of this:

Code: Select all

lsmod

Bit tangential to the Topic - Just curious to know how something that works in Live session doesn't work after install. Could it be issues with some latest driver that gets updated after installation? I intend to recommend and install Mint on some of my friend's system(s). Tried Mint 14 KDE on a live DVD and everything worked (wireless, audio, speakers, etc) flawless out-of-the-box. They were pretty impressed with capabilities of KDE Plasma and keen to install. (It will be my first convert :) )
Your answer will help in fixing me any issues that I encounter with installation.

So, I try again this morning, boot up, and the sound is working fine, go figure. And yes I rebooted several times last night to no avail. Here's the info. . .

I have had same problem. I have an USB soundcard/speaker combination (B&W MM1). It was working fine under Mint 13 until an update I did yesterday. Since then, the speakers produce sound for about 1/2 second and then nothing. The PC is dual boot with Windows 7, so I checked and it works fine. I don't think it is the hardware, therefore.

I played around and did apt-get clean/udate/upgrade and after that it worked again, until I rebooted, when the same problem recurred. The clean/update/upgrade solution no longer worked, however.

Feeling a bit stumped, I thought I would see if the problem disappeared by changing to Mint 14, and on the live CD it worked again. Hurray, I thought. But, on booting to the instalation on the hard disk it went back to not working.

Well that was embarrassing!

The solution was to run the command: alsamixer and then press F6

This told me that the volume of my sound card was set to 00 and it was then possible to increase it using the mouse on the slider
