Playing Ripped Movies on Network Computer

I have my DVD's ripped on an external hard drive connected to a remote windows 7 machine. The Drive is shared and I can see the files just fine, but when I try to play them with vlc it either does nothing or freezes on the title screen. I am running Mint 14 and it appears everything is up to date. Any ideas?
