No Sound on HP dv2500

Hi everyone!
Disclaimer: total linux newbie, here.
I just installed LinuxMint 14 on my old HP dv2500 and had some issues with the wireless (solved) and the sound (not solved). I tried a few of the tricks I saw here and some other linux forums, but I haven't quite seen the same exact issue come up:
There's no sound playback except a clicking/popping sound. So, just to illustrate, if I play a youtube video I get absolutely no sound, but if I get a gchat notification I get this awful popping sound from my speakers. And, if just to annoy me, I muted it but it's decided to turn itself back on when I get a notification. So sweet.
Anyway, when I put this in the terminal:
