No sound when playing DVDs

Postby eKstreme on Sat Jul 19, 2008 4:15 pm

When I put a DVD into the drive, the default DVD player pops up. It plays the first clip (the Warner Brothers splash screen) and then stops. The splash screen doesn't have a sound but I know for a fact there is a music track.

So I try it in VLC, which decides to hang for a minute (the window darkens) and then wakes up, spins the disc, and then shows the DVD's menu, no music is being played. When I hover over the menu items, they change in reaction to the mouse - i.e. I can interact with the menu. I choose to play the disc, leading to another minute-long hang after which the video starts. The video plays normally but there is no sound.

I tried every single audio output module, also, OSS, and Pulse Audio. The main system volume is all jacked up to max - I opened every single option in the mixer. The VLC audio is at full too.

Any thoughts as to how I can fix this?
