Help! Problems with Sound not working on Mint 16

I've looked into everything I know but nothing will play sound. I have literally no idea what else to do. So far I've messed with alsamixer and I've looked into drivers, but I think I'm ok there. My speakers are Harman/Kardon, and as far as i can tell, ALSA works fine, the drivers are fine (as far as I can tell), and im up a river trying to figure out whats wrong ._.

Please help me.

I had no sound when I first installed new versions of Mint (both 15 and 16). I felt pretty silly as it took me a while [way to long] to figure it out (both times!). I was playing with all the sound software too. Digging through config files, etc. I Could not figure it out.

In the end, my solution was just to change the output device from the default (which was HDMI on my video card) to S/PDIF (the one I use). All it took was a click on the sound icon on the panel and choose Sound Settings. Under the Output tab, choose the correct output device. It sounds like you probably want to use the analog output.

I know this the the most basic/simple/obvious thing to do. But check the easiest/obvious things first, right?

I assume you are smarter than me, and that isn't your issue. But I figured I'd throw it out there, and give your thread a bump anyway.

I too am having this problem. I'm very new to linux alltogether but like as above I've read up, gone through the alsamixer; making sure nothing was muted and checked both output devices in the sound icon still nothing.

I have found this link to someone using the same build but, its only a bug report? I'm not quite sure what it means.

EDIT: In a return email from the op of the above bug report I'm told his solution was "I bought a PCI-e video card (a different AMD card that I knew was
supported). Basically at least for the version of debian I am on, the
onboard video card isn't yet supported. I had better success with a

debian-testing or unstable so it's not an option for me.

does this suggest that my best bet is to purchase a pci-e?


I tried orginally following these instructions (http://www.webupd8.org/2010/11/fix-hda- ... qus_thread and http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=314383) but after trying quite a few different fixes I was worried I had changed too much and reinstalled mint for a fresh start which is where I am now.

I can always boot back to win7 where sound works fine (obv) but I really don't like things not working properly.

Edit: sound does not work w/ headphones in either front port or rear line out. I again have tried this

I've found these directions as well (translated from french):
-Then download the packtage either on the site of the Realtek http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/dow ... Down=false
-Once unzip the driver folder alsa-driver-1.0.23
-open a terminal (applications= >accessories= >terminal)
-type: cd and then make a space and drag the driver folder alsa-driver-1.0.23 in the terminal to have directly the path example: Alain@pcubuntoo: ~$ cd ' /home/Alain/Downloads/Realtek-linux-audiopack-5.15/alsa-driver-1.0.23 '

Go to sound settings
Cloose output device, mode and adjust volume (higher). Test sound.
Speakers have to be plugged in and turned on.
Usually it's the green jack.
Try headphones in front and change output device in sound settings.
I've loaded various versions of linux on hundreds of machines and never
found that I was missing a sound driver.

thanks for the info ComputerBob but, that did not help.

Since it's hdmi the speakers are on the tv. The headphones do not work in front or rear. Im pretty bleak on the outlook of this. Google searching it most of the evening shows that tons of folks have been having this problem for about ten years.

AMD has made known the changes they have lined up for the Linux 3.13 kernel merge window. Among the work includes finally enabling Radeon Dynamic Power Management (DPM) for some graphics processors and also restoring HDMI audio support to be enabled by default.

The initial pull request changes to be merged for the Linux 3.13 kernel that affect the Radeon DRM graphics driver include enabling Dynamic Power Management for some ASICs by default, HDMI audio by default, dynamically powering down discrete GPUs on PowerXpress systems, and shipping a lot of bug-fixes.

Radeon DPM appeared in the Linux 3.11 kernel to save power and boost performance for some GPUs but was disabled by default. Dynamic Power Management was further improved in the 3.11 and 3.12 kernel cycles. Now with 3.13, it will be enabled by default. DPM is to be enabled by default for Radeon HD 4000 through Radeon HD 7000 series graphics processors but with some specific ASICs being excluded. See this article for details on the many Radeon DPM improvements.

The other nice power change for Radeon owners with the Linux 3.13 kernel is support for dynamically powering on/off discrete GPUs as part of ATI/AMD PowerXpress systems.

The Radeon HDMI audio support by default comes after the support has long been available but has been turned off since for a small number of users it caused adverse problems. The Radeon HDMI audio problems now appear to be worked out so with Linux 3.13 they will attempt to turn it on for all users.

There's a good chance that's relevant. I just checked out the comments, and at phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?86290-Linux-3-13-To-Enable-Radeon-DPM-HDMI-Audio&p=367731#post367731 there's a command you might try running:

xrandr --output HDMI-0 --set audio on
If that doesn't work, try adding this kernel option:

radeon.audio=1
You'll need to reboot. If that still doesn't work, run:

to get some more specific clues from your log.

I saw those too, I've previously added "radeon.audio=1" and tried "=0" as well after a "splash" line but niether worked.

I did however boot up on the VGA only (Ive been running it and an hdmi as duals) and, when specifiying the correct analog output, get sound from the headphones.

I've been looking around and you're right, this is a problem for lotsa folks.

I did find this guide (http://www.maketecheasier.com/setup-hdm ... k-in-linux), which has some good instructions for using pavucontrol in several different use cases, which you should be able to use since Mint is based on Ubuntu. Try using that - a lot of times, with drivers, I've found that gui controls seem to override the conf files that we modify via command line.

Otherwise, the hard way. This:

that you posted is a good hint. I'd start digging up those error codes top to bottom.

I was reading the alsa instructions on .asoundrc file (http://alsa.opensrc.org/Asoundrc) so I followed their instructions and set it to:

I can confirm now by using "pavucontrol" that sound is going to the hdmi output and it is unmuted but still no sound w/ hdmi output.
