[Solved] Adobe Flash will not play Amazon videos

Postby tom4jean on Tue Dec 03, 2013 7:30 am

I tried this and hal is no longer available in the repositories, only hal-info.
My amazons movies are not working. I tried hal-info alone but see that is only a sub package of hal.
This is not that old of a thread. what happened to the hal package?
Thanks,
Tom

What? It is available.

Code: Select all
$ apt-cache policy hal
hal:
  Installed: 0.5.14-8
  Candidate: 0.5.14-8
  Version table:
 *** 0.5.14-8 0
        500 http://debian.lth.se/lmde/latest/ testing/main amd64 Packages

I am running Mint Linux 16 Cinnamon. Here is my output from the terminal when I try to install HAL:

Code: Select all
linux@linux-Dell-DXP061 ~ $ sudo apt-get install hal
[sudo] password for linux:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package hal is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
However the following packages replace it:
  hal-info

E: Package 'hal' has no installation candidate

I installed hal-info and it did not fix amazon, I did a search on the hal-info package and it is a sub package only of hal, not a replacement.

Thanks Tom

Welcome to LMDE subforum then.
If you want to get help, create your own thread in the main edition support subforum and describe the problem.

I also did a search and found the package 0.5.14-8 here;

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/precise/i386/hal/0.5.14-8

and tried to install it and it said the dependencies are not "satisfiable".
So,I think it is an old package and it seems hal is no longer available, at least for this newerer version of mintlinux 16.

Thanks for the welcome. I didn't want to clutter the board with a new thread and did not think the issue had anyting to do with what desktop enviornment I was running since they all use the same repositories.
I found this thread doing a search on google.

Thanks Tom

This is not the case: LMDE is different, you won't get much help with your problem here (not to mention this is considered offtopic).

You can try Zombie Hal. It solved the problem for me using LM 16 Cinnamon.

https://launchpad.net/~mjblenner/+archive/ppa-hal

Now if I can get Netflix sorted out ...

I have Linuxmint 16 x64 installed. This worked for me.

First
Open a terminal to add this ppa and install HAL.
Type each line and press enter at the end of each line.

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mjblenner/ppa-hal

$ sudo apt-get update

$ sudo apt-get install hal

When HAL is installed type each line of the following and press enter at end of each line.

cd ~/.adobe/Flash_Player

rm -rf NativeCache AssetCache APSPrivateData2

When this is complete, go to the amazon prime web site and select a movie. This time the update will work and the movie will play correctly. You won't have to repeat this each time. Just do this once.

I tried, and succeeded up until the last step (installing hal) where I get:

sudo apt-get install hal
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package hal

I haven't been able to install hal through the terminal and haven't been able to via .deb packages, or perhaps I can't find the right ones? Any one know what I may be doing wrong (short of a clean install)

Let's not clutter the LMDE forum. Split the above posts from this topic in the LMDE forum and moved it here to the Main Edition forum. Don't post support requests for the Main Edition in the LMDE forum! That clutters the forum and is ultimately unhelpful to all involved.

Sorry to raise an older thread, but I had to reinstall LM 16 KDE yesterday and I decided to try Vsenji333's method. I followed the steps exactly. On Amazon, a notice to install Silverlight appeared, but I spotted beneath the screen a button saying something like "Or watch using Adobe Flash." I pressed that and an entire video streamed perfectly. I thought it worth adding the possibility here. I never saw it before. The only other influencing thing I can think of, aside from Vsenji333's method, is a Firefox add-on I tried for the first time, User Agent Overrider, selecting Firefox 24/Windows, though I don't know what it might have done. I'm just glad it worked out.

Thank you to Vsenji333.
