Flash player problem on new system.

Hi there,

I've been using Mint Mate 13 32-bit happily for quite some time now. As I am new to Linux, I haven't touched any configuration.

Recently, after an update, my flash player broke (youtube and stuff..). I've tried to reinstall it (like http://www.wikihow.com/Upgrade-Adobe-Fl ... Linux-Mint), still not working. The Live version from USB worked flawlessly. So I reinstalled my system. Voilá, it worked. Made the suggested updates, it broke.

As Mint 17 is out now, I've tried the Live version. Youtube and stuff are not running out of the box. (I have downloaded version with codecs included)

What am I doing wrong? Any help is appreciated.

Hello, patientLearner.

What exactly is it that tells you your Flash player had been broken? Can you please elaborate a bit?
As long as this webpage Adobe Flash Player confirms that
You have version 11,2,202,378 installed
you have got the most recent Flash version for Linux Mint installed and it is not broken.
(Note: the genuine Google Chrome browser brings along its own Pepper based flash player and will have a different version string.)

Kind regards,
Karl

Upgrade-Adobe-Flash-Player-on-Linux-Mint: good way of making something which is so trivial really complicated.
Use Synaptic package manager to uninstall mint-flashplugin-11 and install flashplugin-installer instead. flashplugin-installer will download and install the most recent Adobe Flash player correctly. flashplugin-installer will be updated through the normal repositories whenever Adobe publish a new release, so that you will go on getting the most recent Adobe Flash Player in the future, too.

Thank you for your quick answer! As I recall Adobe has said that the current version is installed. I have tried chromium an chrome (I guess). Didn't work. So, when I open up, say youtube, I can see the suggestions on the right but not the black frame with it's content.

Somewhere, I have read that something like gtk2 is not compatible with gtk3 or so.

I have tried the solution karlchen has told me. Agreed, it is much simpler. flashplugin-installer is now installed via synaptic, updates have been made. Now, Firefox still shows an empty field on the adobe site, Chromium says Shockwave Player cannot be loaded.

Do I need to install "adobe-flashplugin" or is this done automatically by "flashplugin-installer"?

Hello, patientLearner.
Do I need to install "adobe-flashplugin" or is this done automatically by "flashplugin-installer"?
Actually, you might have asked this question before doing what this guy told you to do.
Installing adobe-flashplugin would have been an alternative to using flashplugin-installer. So it is either adobe-flashplugin or flashplugin-installer, never both.

flashplugin-installer:
Will download the latest Adobe flash plugin for Linux Mint from the Adobe website as a .tgz archive, unpack it and install it.

adobe-flashplugin
Is the latest Adobe flash plugin for Linux Mint from the Adobe website, converted into a .deb archive, which the Linux Mint software installer (apt, apt-get, aptitude ...) can use directly and install it.

Result:
In both cases the same result. You will have the latest Flash plugin for Linux available in Firefox. It should be available in Chromium, too. Yet, I think I read in this forum that current Chromium versions experience problems with this Flash plugin.

Note:
Google Chrome brings along its own Flash player, not the Adobe one, but a Pepper based Flash player.

About Youtube and the latest Linux Flash Player:
It seems that more an more Youtube videos cause a warning that a newer Flash player were required than 11.2.202.378. The Windows version is 14.0.0.125 and Chrome brings along a v14.0.0.125, too.
So far in all cases where I came across such warnings, there was a way of confirming or ignoring the warnings, and the video was played nonetheless. - Yet, I do not watch Youtube regularly.

Install Pepper Flash Player For Chromium In Ubuntu/Linux Mint Via PPA:
There is a way of installing the genuine Google Chrome Pepper Flash Player 14.0.0.125 without installing and using Google Chrome: Install Pepper Flash Player For Chromium In Ubuntu Via PPA

HTH,
Karl

Thank you again, karlchen, for pointing that out. Very detailled answer :) !

Having installed flashplugin-installer makes it now work in Chromium, but not in Firefox. I might have deleted the Firefox flash plugin. As this is not so nice and I am faced with bad performance in Chromium, I have to figure something out.

As I see that adobe-flashplugin has way more and better votes than flashplugin-installer or mint-flashplugin, is it better to use the former one instead?

Hello, patientLearner.

As said before, installing adobe-flashplugin or using flashplugin-installer to execute the installation should in the end have absolutely identical results.
Yet, if you wish then there is nothing wrong with removing flashplugin-installer and installing adobe-flashplugin.

Kind regards,
Karl

Actually pal, I'm not convinced you did anything wrong.
I've had similar problems with youtube and even news videos for maybe 3 weeks now.
There must be something about one of the updates that did this. I hate to say it but xp still plays these videos fine.
It's not unusual for updates to solve some problems but cause something unexpected.
I just wish someone would take our observations seriously.
