[SOLVED] Can't find the right sound device

Postby SonicLeaf on Mon Jul 07, 2014 5:35 am

Hello everyone!

I've been tasked to save my parents computer since the whole Windows xp thing, so I decided to give Linux a try. I've never used it myself but I'm learning as fast as I can, however, I've run into some trouble. I'm currently running Linux Mint 17 Xfce because it's an older computer and I needed something lightweight, but I can't get the sound to work. The problem is that all the sound devices doesn't show up in the sound settings, it can see the graphics card but I'm using the sound from the motherboard. The thing is that I tried Mate 16 before installing xfce and everything worked perfectly there after i had changed the output sound device, so I'm guessing there's some driver that comes with mate but not xfce? Like I said, I'm a newbie so I'm happy for any advice and help I can get.

/Erik

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Hi,

a bit more info on the hardware would be nice, for example what is the sound card?

Hi!

Of course, the motherboard is a MSI P4M900M3 and it's the on-board sound i want to use. I don't have anymore detailed specs right now but let me know what you need.

ok,

the sound is a Realtek® ALC888.

so try this first.

that said for Mint 17 he system is abit outdated (meaning any new update might break the thing again...)
