The sound distorts at higher volume levels in mint linux and I get a low quality audio in general, where as it is perfectly fine on the same computer in windows at even higher volume levels (dual boot)....
How do I fix this ? could it be a driver issue ?
I have asus p5p43td motherboard, and using onboard audio.

If you have pulseaudio (probably do), run (install if needed) pavucontrol and make sure the "boosts" aren't set too high.
Same thing for "alsamixer", or better "gnome-alsamixer".
When that doesn't work, delete ~/.pulse* and any other *pulse* files under ~.
When that doesn't work, uninstall/purge pulseaudio. You don't need it. Then reboot.
