I'm new to Linux, so any code talk and I will not understand. When I plug in the HDMI cable to my laptop going to the TV the only screen that shows is my desktop background, no icons. Just the Linux Mint 17 default background. How do I get HDMI to project a presentation, so I can teach a lesson.

With the projector connected go to Monitors in your Menu or Control Center and check the box
"Same image on all monitors"
