Polaroid Pbt3011 Bluetooth Tower Speaker won't connect

Post by Luchian »

It connected once for a minute, but every other time I've tried connecting, it won't. I didn't change any settings, so I'm not understanding the sudden lack of ability to connect.
I am running:

Code: Select all

lsb_release -a
Distributor ID: LinuxMint
Description: Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca
Release: 17.1
Codename: rebecca
So you have some information to help trouble shoot. I think this will be some of the information that you'll need.

It's refusing to connect. When it does connect for a second, it's no longer showing the Headset output option.
Under the PBT3011 device settings, it shows:
Paired: Yes
Type: Headset
And it has the address listed.
However, it shows under settings that the connection is "on", despite the Bluetooth showing that the connection is "off".
To be clear, under settings it's "on", but on the desktop icon, when I pull that up it's off. And because the output is via "headset", and the "headset" output isn't showing under settings, it won't actually play. I can't stream anything via bluetooth to the speaker.
^
I hope that all makes sense.

Thanks in advance for any and all assistance.

[SOLVED] Polaroid Pbt3011 Bluetooth Tower Speaker won't conn

Post by RML »

I had the same problem trying to connect an Oontz Angle. Here's how I got it working. Note: all steps are in the Blueman app except for terminal commands where shown. There are two sections below:
Part I- First time connection
Part II- Connection after restart, suspend, hibernate, bluetooth service or device reconnect

Part I: First time bluetooth connection to a device

1- Install Blueman if it's not already.

2a - Run this code from a command prompt:

Code: Select all

pactl list | grep -i module-bluetooth-discover
2b - If the code above returns nothing, then run this code:

Code: Select all

pactl load-module module-bluetooth-discover
It will return a value:
user@mint ~ $ pactl load-module module-bluetooth-discover
19

Reference/credit http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 8&p=869500

3- In Blueman do these steps with the icons in this order:
- Search for your device
- Add your device
- Pair your device
- Trust your device

4- Click Setup, notice Headset Service is already selected, then click Forward. The expected response is "Device added and connected successfully."
BluemanHeadset.png
5- Under Device, verify your device is added as both Headset Service and Audio Sink under the Disconnect section. If Audio Sink is not under the Disconnect section repeat the previous step, this time for A2DP (Send Audio). Again, verify both Headset Service and Audio Sink are listed under the Disconnect Section. If A2DP gives an error and refuses to connect then re-run step 2b.
BluemanDevice.png
6- Go back to the Device option, select Audio Profile and make sure High Fidelity Playback (A2DP) is selected.
AudioProfile.png
7- Now go to your Linux Sound settings and you will see your device. Select it and the mode on the right should now show High Fidelity Playback (A2DP) as opposed to Analog Stereo Output for your built in speakers.

Part II: Connection to device previously made but:
- after restarting computer
- coming off of suspend/hibernate
- bluetooth service turned off then back on
- bluetooth device powered off then back on

Under Device, Disconnect, the Headset Service is probably still connected but Audio Sink is not.
To reconnect you must first re-run Step 2b:

Code: Select all

pactl load-module module-bluetooth-discover
Then, verify it's connected (Step 5) and re-run Step 6.

A startup/resume script would be nice but I haven't explored beyond this.

I keep receiving:
Device added successfully, but failed to connect.
It also only lists:
A2D2 Sink (Send Audio) --->This is already selected.
Don't Connect
Those are the only options, once I choose Setup.

I updated the instructions above based on my experience over the last couple weeks. Check out Step 5. What I've found is A2DP won't connect until this is run:

Code: Select all

pactl load-module module-bluetooth-discover

Then retry connecting to A2DP Sink in Step 5 followed by Steps 6 and 7.

Hopefully these issues will go away when Blueberry is released. See http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2015/03/linu ... -blueberry and http://segfault.linuxmint.com/2015/03/blueberry/

All this:

Code: Select all

pactl load-module module-bluetooth-discover
does is return: 24

Headset service still doesn't show.

When I attempt to audiosink, it says:
Connection Failed: Stream setup failed.

When I go to setup, A2D2 Sink (Send Audio) is still automatically selected and Headset still doesn't show. I still receive: Device added successfully, but failed to connect.

So, I deleted the device and attempted to redo it completely. However, now when I search for the speaker, it doesn't even find it. So I don't have the option to connect or setup.

So, I tried this again:

Code: Select all

pactl load-module module-bluetooth-discover
Now, it returns:
Failure: Module initialization failed
And I'm stuck at this point, unable do anything, since it can't even seem to find the bluetooth speaker.

It still might be the missing firmware causing problems

Code: Select all

wget https://www.dropbox.com/s/75lju0anucw3x9x/fw-0a5c_21e3.hcd

Code: Select all

sudo cp fw-0a5c_21e3.hcd /lib/firmware/

Code: Select all

sudo cp fw-0a5c_21e3.hcd /lib/firmware/brcm/

Code: Select all

sudo modprobe -r btusb

Code: Select all

sudo modprobe btusb

Code: Select all

dmesg | tail -20
And see if any firmware errors are there

Re: Polaroid Pbt3011 Bluetooth Tower Speaker won't connect

As mentioned, for my bluetooth speaker, if I have previously turned it off or come out of suspend, I find I have to re-run this code:

Code: Select all

pactl load-module module-bluetooth-discover
(It should return a value)

Then follow the steps above to start Audio Sink. Sometimes the Headset Service needs to be restarted as well. It may take a couple times to restart the service(s). This last part is not consistent. Finally, I always have to select Audio Profile and select High Fidelity Playback (A2DP) because the profile will have been selected to "Off".

Hopefully this will help you or anyone else struggling with a bluetooth device.

I updated the firmware.
It did not return any errors.
However, I still receive:

Code: Select all

pactl load-module module-bluetooth-discover
Failure: Module initialization failed
I'm starting to think it's just the Polaroid device that's the problem. My phone (Android, Samsung Galaxy S5) can see my laptop via Bluetooth, but it can't seem to find the speaker. And when I "Set Up a New Device" or simply "Search for nearby devices", my laptop can't find the speaker. So the speaker seems to be the proverbial odd man out. But I'm not sure how to correct that, since according to the manual, all I have to do is set the "mode" to "Bluetooth". That's pretty had to mess-up, seeing as how it's only one button, and the light blinks at you, when it's on.

I'm stumped. I guess I have to contact Polaroid. This may have nothing to do with Mint/Linux at all.
