Video plays in slow motion and lost USB sound 17.1 (Solved)

Post by jetercreek »

Video plays in very slow motion. Any video. Youtube, news sites and archived files from many years ago.
Web and off line same. VLC plays files but with diagonal skew also in slow motion. Resident Video player
was upright, but approx 1 frame per second. Outboard USB sound card has also stopped working for music even.
MoBo sound is OK. This is on Cinnamon 64-bit 17.1 upgraded from 17 as soon as stable release was anounnced.
No problems until this week.

Updated to -37 kernel yesterday. Was -17. No diff. Checked for restricted codecs and all in place. See no updates that
should account for this.

Where to start?

edit: everything works fine running from the Live DVD

Try creating a new user, logging out and then back in as new user--
that will narrow things

Interestingly it works fine on the new ID. Of course, that is much as booting from
the live DVD.

It's a newb question, but how do I revert back to where the trouble began?

I did this for weird vlc behavior.
delete the vlc config folder (moved it to a new folder to reference the differences).
This is a hidden folder in your home named .config/vlc.
vlc will make a new one when it starts.
It will reset any customizations.
You can experiment with this on your new account first.

Great! Things are looking up. That fixed VLC playback and Video (Totem?).
Both play locally stored files now with analog audio. Still no joy on Youtube.
Firefox and Chromium tried with same results. Is there a config file tied to
both browsers?

Cant say for chromium. For Firefox you can reset via the drop-down
for the "hamburger" icon (upper right) click on the question mark, and click Troubleshooting info.
There will be a reset option (refresh). It will save your old FF settings in a folder on the desktop.
First make sure you have latest updates though.

Didn't help. I'm stumped. Will boot the live DVD again and
compare some files and changes. Tomorrow! Something
to look forward to.

Thanks for the help. I can listen to music again, at least thru the
analog jack. Not sure if the audio/video happened together, but
noticed it at the same time.

I deleted a file file from '.mozilla/firefox'. Was named 'ovddyqtxq8.default-12345564' or similar. This backup file contains
operating paramenters and bookmarks, etc. After reinstalling my backed up bookmarks, Youtube started playing properly.
It now also plays on Chromium. Go Figure!

I do not do windows and have been on Linux since the Suse days, but I am not an expert and do not understand this.
Perhaps rather than Solved, a better title would be "Fixed Accidentally"
