DVD playback quality
I am in dire need of assistance, because multimedia issues are placing me in imminent danger of having to re-install a windows partition in order to appease my wife. The biggest problem is the quality of encrypted DVD playback. VLC is grainy and pixelized, Kaffeine and Xine suffer from occasional screen flickers, mplayer looks great but does not include menu support?! In order to keep my wife happy (we don't own a TV or DVD player) I need video playback quality that is the equal of what I can get with Windows apps. Any suggestions?

Re: DVD playback quality
Did you disable Compiz? It is often enabled by default, and disabling it may help.
Your graphics card may not be using optimal drivers. Enabling "restricted drivers" for your graphics card can be a big help. Less so, but the key for some, is to run Envy to have it compile and install vendor-specific drivers for your hardware.

Try to switch between video outputs in Control Center > Multimedia Systems Selector > Video tab > Default Ouput Plugin. Some video playback issues can be resolved by using the 'No Xv' plugin.
