i am having problem getting mplayer to play anything. i have tried web video {cnn.com} and local avi and wmv without success. movie player and vlc do play these local video files but not mplayer.

I am having problems with MPlayer as well. I have to go Preferences -> Video -> Select "xv" to play video files. I had to do it a couple of times before it became the default every time I used MPlayer. Once I select "xv" it works fine.

you are more than right, video started playing after i made the switch. i still miss audio though, but i'm going to install some mp3 decoders through synaptic and see what happens next.
