Blu Ray - how well is it supported now?

Post by pyite »

I have a VDPAU compatible card and a blu ray burner - is it possible to play blu ray movies on Linux Mint yet?

Thanks,
Mark

hmmm
don't know
I googled blu ray movies on Linux and found only old topics or topics about PS3
This is a two part problem - does the player work - do we have codecs

pyite,

Actually, your topic would be more appropriate if it was, "How well does Blu-Ray support Linux?"

The problem is that Blu-Ray is completely proprietary and has chosen to only support Windows. Linux doesn't have the option of supporting it at this time. Only the consortium behind Blu-Ray can enable or allow that to happen.

Go to the Blu-Ray forums and ask when and if that will happen.

Hi Fred
Your favourite answer :)
I agree, but I saw talk of Linux playing blu ray, but not so I could say anything definite so I guessed it was kind of undecided :)

Once again you are correct. Just trying to keep things in perspective. :-)
