Graphical glitches/full screen flicker.

Postby sb360 on Tue May 12, 2009 9:20 am

I am using mint6 Felicia with a gnome interface and I am having problems with some graphical glitches during some applications.
It is most noticeable with full screen Youtube videos as they are fine until I maximise them and then i get lots of flickering and the video almost becomes unwatchable. It isn't just a Youtube problem though as It happens with many full screen apps and some windowed ones as well but it does only appear to affect graphically intense programs.

My graphics card drivers where updated to the recommended ones when I first installed mint (live CD not mint4win)

I have experienced this with other distros so I'm starting to think its related to my hardware.

lspci gives me this :

Hehe, I used to have troubles like this. Minimize everything to the taskbar, then open the video/app and play it. As long as there are no windows behind it, there probably won't be any graphic glitches. This used to happen to me all the time. It also did that to my screensaver :( that's how far it went lol

Yea that doesn't fix it, thanks for trying. I think mine is an actual hardware fault though as it happens on lots and lots of applications under many different circumstances. I think it may just be a graphics card issue. It is hard to describe, it also happens on boot up after the splash it appears to flicker a really messed up version of the slash screen on three small tiles on top of the screen.

Is there anything I can update or install that might help with this.

It could be faulty drivers. I suggest you rollback (you can find those on Mint/Ubuntu forums), and use VESA if you're not doing anything intensive (gaming, video production). That would be my second guess.

I tried installing the drivers that AMD provide for this and that didn't help but I have now sorted the problem by removing compiz(which I appear to have had 2 versions of) and this totally fixed it.

Thanks for the help.

Hi All,
First post, just installed Mint last week.
I'm having a very similar problem but it just seems to be affecting offline video content. Happening with all video file types and players. Fullscreen and small.
I tried the players that came with the install, then VLC and something else, same problem.
If I remove Compiz, will this fix the problem? And, how will removing Compiz affect me?
Thanks.

Removing compiz worked for me so Its worth trying. It will really only make things less pretty.
