MPlayer and MPlayer Xine Any difference?

Postby abhinow on Sun Jul 12, 2009 3:56 am

Hello,

Can anybody tell me that is there any difference in MPlayer and MPlayer Xine?

I am aware of they are based on Gnome and KDE respectively. But which is more functional? consumes less memory resources?

I am using a 9 year old celeron 433MHz PC. I found Mint running great on my PC! Even better than XP! I am amazed with the Full Featured 7th realease of Mint. Before that I was using Ubuntu. And struggled a lot for geting codecs run on ubuntu, but no results. Thats why I am concerned with less memory consuming platform.

Any help on this is much appreciated.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

So Mint runs fine, then no problem previous experience with another distribution is history..
--or do you mean you have a supercomputer running Mint now, but you are concerned that it won't run well on a 433MHz Celeron PC; if so you are right..

all reasons for some concern when running a modern OS, with a full suite of services and applications..
  • low processor speed
  • cpu type being Celeron
  • amount of memory (RAM)
  • the video card type

  • Mplayer is a media player
  • Xine is a media player
  • Mplayer sometimes uses a xine backend component for some functions
--its a mix & match situation.. thus there is no mplayer vs mplayer/xine application comparison..

Thanks for the precious infoarmation.

Currently Mint is not running Divx encoded files(.avi) MPlayer giving error that file not available. Is this codec problem? If so, how to add this codec and will adding this cause any problem to other codecs?

Thanks in advance for any help.

You could try installing VLC from the repos and see if the files will play. VLC will usually play anything you can throw at it.
