Mplayer/Xine lags on h.264 playback

Postby Vimk on Sun Jul 12, 2009 5:47 am

My problem is that just about any HD h.264 content causes serious lag in playback on mplayer and xine unless I launch it with a higher niceness value from terminal such as:

Code: Select all
sudo nice -15 xine

Which is a decent solution however is rather annoying to do whenever I plan on watching something. Is there any way to have mplayer/xine launch at a value of -15 by default?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Well not the best solution but edit rc.local
Code: Select all
gksu gedit /etc/rc.local

Just before exit 0 add your command

Wouldn't that just cause the command to be run on startup? It automates it at least, but for now it's more useful just to launch from terminal.

Yes it would be run at startup but the value should be kept
Oh dang - does this this start xine and not only set the value? I get a "not found" message if I try this, xine not installed
You should not run applications as root especially not those that connect to the internet

Yeah, the command nice would launch whichever application I am changing the priority of.

Ah - I've never had to use it so I thought it just changed the priority - should have checked :)
A script that starts as you start an application is another matter
Do you really need to use sudo?

To give a higher priority to a program requires super user privileges, luckily it doesn't launch xine as super user but rather launches nice with root privileges once.

OK - I only heard of nice until now - never tested it
I doubt there is a way to have xine start with higher priority by default - at least I did not find anything in that way

Yeah, so far I haven't had much luck finding a way either. Thanks for trying though.
