Sound Not Working, Thinkpad R52 [SOLVED]

Postby a_newlinuxguy on Mon Jul 20, 2009 1:21 pm

I am installing Linux Mint on my wifes computer and am having problems getting the sound to work. A quick search on the boards and I unmuted things in terminal and also ran the commands that most seem to ask for:

Code: Select all
~ $ lspci | grep Audio
00:1e.2 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 03)

 ~ $ aplay -l

I can't get any sound to come through. Tests won't work, youtube won't work, playing a CD won't work. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

EDIT:
Forgot I am on the new Mint. I am not sure if I am on XFCE or KDE, I just downloaded it from the Main Edition on the download page.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Have you typed alsamixer in the terminal and set all the levels at max?

Yes I have done that.

I followed the instructions here, even though it is not my laptop, I thought it was worth a shot:

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s ... tion/61903

After doing that, I now have a high pitched squeal coming out, so I guess I am progressing a little.

EDIT:

Did a hard shutdown, turned it back on, sound works. However if I get to high I get a high pitch squeal, would that have to do with alsamixer at 100%?

Answered my own question, yes it does.
