Won't play encrypted DVD / libdvdcss2 is installed

Post by pepper »

I'm using Mint 7 x64 on a brandnew notebook Asus X5DIJ-SX018L. One of the issues with that combination is, that it only plays non-encypted DVDs, but not encrypted DVDs. Totem Video-Player 2.26.1 says that the source seems to b e encrypted and it looked as if I tried to play an encrypted DVD whithout libdvdcss. But libdvdcss2 v 1.2.10-0.2 is installed! Synaptic reports no conflicts, the required libc6 is here too. The builtin drive is a Matshita DVD-RAM UJ880AS.

Don't have the same DVD drive, but I have no issues in playing dvd movies (bought from stores)
I think it does in the install; however, if it is missing, installing one of the media players like VLC will enable it..
--OK, maybe I was incorrect about during install, I use VLC as a movie player..
  • apt show libdvdcss2
    Package: libdvdcss2
    State: installed
    Automatically installed: no
    Version: 1.2.10-0.2medibuntu1
In terminal, check
  • apt search dvdcss
    v libdvdcss -
p libdvdcss-dev - Simple foundation for reading DVDs - devel
i libdvdcss2 - Simple foundation for reading DVDs - runti
Maybe the drive doesn't work at all..
I usually use LG/Hitachi or Plextor CD, DVD drives..

This might help..check

--possible region code setting, though if sold in the country purchased in, should not be an issue

Are you sure that DVD you are trying to play is valid, because this error:

libdvdread: Invalid title IFO (VTS_01_0.IFO).

seems to say it is not.

You can also get more device information by installing sdparm
In terminal, check
  • apt search sdparm
i sdparm - Output and modify SCSI device parameters
  • sdparm /dev/cdrom
    /dev/cdrom: HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4163B A102 [cd/dvd]
Read write error recovery mode page:
    AWRE 1 [cha: y, def: 1, sav: 1]
    ARRE 0 [cha: n, def: 0, sav: 0]
    PER 0 [cha: y, def: 0, sav: 0]
    ...
And I don't want to look up all the status replies from the device..

Thank you folks for your advice. In the meantime I've read on. In the end I did what I intended to avoid: I set the regioncode of the drive using 'regionset'. Now the machine plays encrypted DVDs too. Seems to be a special feature of some Matshita drives, that they themselves check the regioncode. As my drive hadn't set a code, there were a mismatch to the code of the DVD. So the problem is all in the drive and your OS and system won't change a thing, or so I understnd the case. So beware of Matshita drives.
