Sound issues seem to be consistent problem with Linux in general, is there a specific reason it can't be written to accommodate hardware/software as Windows does. I recently changed over to Linux Mint because I was getting tired of the security issues in Windows, I've also tried Ubuntu and openSUSE, so far Mint is the best but the problems with the sound are very complicated compared to Windows. I think if this was solved you would have allot more people switching to this type of software. Anyway are you able to help with the printout of lspci or do you need more?? Thanks Guy

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

This may work well for you.
viewtopic.php?f=48&t=32725

Notice that I made fresh clean install to ensure the exact solution.

If you feel very experimental, you may also try to compile OSS4 from Mercurial
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OpenSound

Install several Mints in multiple boot, try different sound system and choose which you like.
If you do not know how to install multiple boot,
read some 20 pages (with pictures) of this nice book:

Ubuntu Linux for Dummies.chm

This book may make your life much easier with Linux (and much more interesting).

EDIT: I have this on my old IBM notebook:

00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 01)

The best solution for you is OSS4.
You can install deb, or you can compile from Mercurial.
deb is not the latest version, but it would surely work for you too.

you may read this too:
