Questions about codecs, DVD playback, web plugins...
Before you post please read this
I've been banging my head for while looking for a way to play a video file as a screensaver, preferably through mplayer or through some other accelerated media player.
I've set up xscreensaver to start mplayer but I get a black screen with some text in yellow with the last row stating:
Terminal type 'unknown' is not defined.
I've also tried xwinwrap but it doesn't work either.
I did some googling and found something about vroot.h and patching the source but I was not able to find a patch matching the current version of mplayer. If it's not possible to fix easily in mplayer other suggestions of ways of playing videos with sound as a screensaver would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

I don't see any reason you couldn't rename the file for xscreensaver located in /usr/bin and replace it with a bash script that calls up VLC (or your media player of choice) in fullscreen mode and plays a selection of videos.
Keep in mind you'd probably have to use CTRL-Q to exit it, as moving the mouse or hitting keys wouldn't have the same effect on a media player as a screensaver.
